Intimate hygiene without taboo (for them and for them)
Feminine intimate hygiene and the care of a woman's external genitals should be different from caring for other parts of the body as they have different characteristics. This requires a variety of hygiene measures and precautions, which are very important in preventing infections and maintaining good vaginal health.
GENERAL FEMININE INTIMATE HYGIENE TIPS
1- Keep your genitals clean and dry
For intimate hygiene, you can use neutral soap, only water
or water with bicarbonate. It should dry without shedding. It is imperative to
cleanse the perineal area from front to back to prevent germs from being
transferred from the anus to the vulva.
2- Do not perform vaginal douching (except as directed by
your doctor).
Many women feel cleaner if they douche after menstruation or
intercourse. However, this practice can increase vaginal discharge. These
showers remove beneficial bacteria that protect the vagina from vaginal
infections.
3- Take probiotics during antibiotic treatment.
It is recommended to take probiotics during treatment with
some antibiotics to avoid a vaginal yeast infection.
4- Avoid using perfumed intimate hygiene products in the
genital area.
5- Avoid tight clothing
We must avoid or limit the use of trousers or other very
tight clothing that can irritate the intimate area.
6- Cotton underwear, avoid silk and nylon.
Wear cotton underwear. Avoid underwear made of silk or
nylon, as these materials do not absorb well and restrict airflow. This can
increase sweating in the genital area, which can cause irritation.
7. Women with diabetes must maintain good blood glucose
control.
8. Use a condom or other barrier method to avoid getting
or spreading sexually transmitted infections.
If the vaginal discharge is caused by a sexually transmitted
disease, the sex partner or partners should be treated, even if they have no
symptoms. Refusal of sexual partners to take treatment can lead to re-infection
and inflammation in the pelvic area. This inflammation, called pelvic
inflammatory disease, can lead to infertility.
FEMALE INTIMATE HYGIENE TIPS FOR WOMEN IN MENOPAUSE
In addition to the tips for feminine intimate hygiene described above, other options will be recommended for women in menopause. When the ovaries stop producing estrogen, the pH of the vagina changes. In addition, it reduces the thickness of the walls (mucous membranes) that cover it, making infections easier. Over time, the number of vaginal discharges decreases, vaginal dryness and atrophy appear.
Many women at this stage report the appearance or worsening
of involuntary loss of urine, causing moisture at this level. For this reason,
we recommend:
1- Maintain adequate female intimate hygiene habits
2- Use moisturizers/lubricants and topical estrogens.
These types of products are applied directly to the vulva
and vagina and help relieve irritation and discomfort and moisturize the skin.
